Heat pumps are some of the most efficient heating and cooling systems on the market. They are efficient because they do not have to generate the heat or cold—the systems just pull the temperature needed from outside to the correct area inside the home. The idea is that they can generate heat with electricity for approximately a quarter of the price of an electric resistance system or oil system.

The three types of heat pumps are air-to-air, geothermal, and water-source. The most commonly used system is the air-to-air system, which comes in a duct or ductless variations and is a split system (one part inside, one part outside the home).
